9th May 2016
Reviews have started to appear for King Lear in Brooklyn and I will add them as and when. Click here to read them. There was also a very interesting article Michael wrote for the TLS which you can access at http:www.the-tls.co.uk/articles/public/in-pursuit-of-shakespeare/ or click on this link to read it on this site. As I mentioned in my note of the 15th April Michael ceremonially planted a mulberry tree in Abington Park on the 23rd April. To view some photographs of the event click on this link.
6th May 2016
Michael is doing a platform performance at the National Theatre in London on Monday 16th May. The title of the event is entitled: Lear and Rosalind: The Biographers Tale. There will be a book signing of King Lear in Brooklyn following the event. Full details can be found at: https://www.nationaltheatre.org.uk/shows/lear-and-rosalind-the-biographers-tale
15th April 2016
I’ve started to add a few reviews for King Lear and will attempt to pick up any that appear at the other venues. A couple of other things: Michael might be interviewed on the Today programme on Radio 4 on the 23rd April probably between 8.30 and 9, so listen out for that. Also I notice from the King Lear programme that to mark the anniversary of Shakespeare’s death Michael has been invited to plant a new mulberry tree at Abington Park which was the home of Shakespeare’s granddaughter, Elizabeth Hall. The original was planted courtesy of the actor David Garrick in 1778. The ceremony will take place at 6.15.
4th April 2016
Unfortunately Michael was not the winner in either of the awards for which he was nominated. James Shapiro received the Sheridan Morley Book Prize and Mark Gatiss Best Supporting Actor.
29th February 2016
Michael has been nominated in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role in the 2016 Oliviers for Antigonus in The Winter’s Tale. He’s up against Mark Gatiss in Three Days in the Country, Tom Sturridge in American Buffalo and David Suchet in The Importance of Being Earnest. The ceremony is at the Royal Opera House on the 3rd April.
25th February 2016
Michael is among the nominees for the 2015 Sheridan Morley Book Prize for the third time for his book Let Me Play the Lion Too. How To Be An Actor. Other Nominees are David Hare, Peter Whitebrook, James Shapiro and a joint nominee for Qais Akbar Omar and Stephen Landrigan. This is the third time Michael has been nominated (previously for Are You There Crocodile in 2003 and Sweet William in 2013), so hopefully this will be third time lucky for a win. The winner will be announced at a ceremony on March 2nd at the Garrick Club in London.
10th February
Further members of the King Lear cast have been announced and I am adding them to the page as and when they appear.
5th January 2016
Michael is appearing in an episode of the current series of Father Brown. The episode is entitled The Daughter of Autolycus and will be broadcast on the 8th January.
22nd December 2015
Michael is currently still in The Winter’s Tale at the Garrick Theatre in London until January 2016 but April 2016 will see him start off on a UK tour of King Lear. It will commence at the Theatre Royal in Northampton on the 1stApril and there will be performances on the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death on the 23rd April. You can find full details of venues and dates on the above link. There is also a book due for publication In April - King Lear in Brooklyn published by Oberon Books.
